  Selecting a Book
Most important is to encourage a child/student to select a book on subjects they are interested in reading.
  • After choosing a book, suggest to the student/child to open it to a page anywhere in the middle of the book.
  • Have them read the page to themselves.
  • If they do not understand five or more of the words on the page, most likely the book is too difficult for their level to read alone.
  • Give them an opportunity to share what they have read. This can be done in several ways:
  • Small group discussions
  • Partner sharing
  • Oral presentations
  • Sharing with a student in lower grade (cross-age sharing)
  • Parent sharing
Remember reading for enjoyment should be one level lower than the teaching level.
Books for teaching can be more difficult, but whether you are a teacher or a parent, books at this level should have active guidance by you in the reading process.
Reading can then be most enjoyable at any level.
